Security on St Stithians College Campus

Author: René Swart

Schools are potentially soft targets for petty theft. We have unfortunately not been immune to this and have had several incidents of thefts from vehicles and school bags reported since the start of term.  In most of these incidents, valuables have been left in full view inside unlocked vehicles or bags are left unattended. We ask that you please be security conscious at all times (even if you move away from your car for a few minutes) by ensuring your vehicle is locked. Physically check the handle before leaving your vehicle and making sure your windows are closed. Do not leave valuables in the vehicle. Also keep an eye out for suspicious-looking people and report them to security.

Students should not leave their bags unattended, especially if they have tablets, laptops, cell phones, cash, valuable items of clothing, etc. in the bag. All students are provided with lockable lockers in their schools, which they should be using.

In addition to access control at the campus gates, we have over over 150 CCTV cameras on campus, anti-jamming alarms in the parking areas and guards patrolling the campus. However, preventing crime on campus is everyone’s responsibility.

Please note the following contact numbers: Security Supervisor on 082-690-8474 (24-hour number) or Colin Kallee (Security Manager) on 083-729-7387. The sooner our security staff are informed of an incident, the greater our chances are of apprehending the culprit or finding the stolen goods.

It is helpful if you are reporting a suspicious person to try and keep them in your sight until security arrives (but without approaching them), and to be able to advise what they are wearing, colour of their hair, where they are on campus, if they are carrying anything, if they are in a car - the make, colour, registration number, etc. If we work together this will help us improve the security on campus.

We would also like to alert you to be very security conscious at the William Nicol/Peter Place, William Nicol/Republic and William Nicol/Sandton Drive intersections. We have had several reports of hijackings and robberies at these intersections which occurs mostly at peak hours. Please keep your windows up and doors locked at all times, and cell phones and valuables out of sight.
