ST STITHIANS u16 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT 2024

Our signature St Stithians U16 Basketball Tournament took place from 16 - 18 February and it was a massive success.  The weather played ball and the entire weekend was blessed with sunny Johannesburg skies and signature hot summer days.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to #OneAndaAll who contributed to the smooth-running and enjoyment of the tournament.  It is truly a team effort and one that results in a weekend of hospitality for our visiting teams and guests, highly competitive and entertaining basketball and just an uplifting weekend watching young athletes doing what they love best.

After three days of intense basketball, KwaZulu-Natal's very own Westville Boys' High School pipped St Stitihians Boys' College 36-35 in what is being called the most thrilling and entertaining tournament final so far! It was St George's College that took the bronze in the Boys' Section with a win over defending champions St John's College.  In the Girls' Tournament, It was Soweto Academy that took the top honours with a good win (20 – 7) over Saheti. Our St Stiithians Girls' College u16s took bronze and we are incredibly proud of this team who showed heart, courage and skill during the event.

Across our Boys' and Girls' Tournaments, we welcomed 40 teams from all over South African and some from across our borders. We thank these teams for being a part of our tournament and leaving it all out on the courts!

We took great pleasure in welcoming our participants and visitors to this highlight event on our St Stithians College calendar and hope that everyone enjoyed it as much as we did! Until next year...

It gives me great pleasure to welcome players, coaches, parents and spectators to the 6th edition of our St Stithians annual U16 Basketball Tournament. My wish is that you will enjoy fierce competition, outstanding sportsmanship, connection with friends, celebration of excellence and our Saints hospitality on our lovely campus. The thrill of this festival is heightened by our sister school, St Stithians Girls’ College, hosting their u16 Basketball Festival at the same time. We wish them a successful festival.

My favourite basketball player is Stephen Curry. What I love about him is his positivity and the fact that he plays with a smile on his face. He is super skilled and breaks records, but he has not always been the best – he has grown into that through discipline, humility and hard work. I also like the fact that he is very public in his faith, something I would like more young men to be. I like this quote by Curry, and hope that you will find inspiration from it: “If you take time to realize what your dream is and what you really want in life — no matter what it is, whether it’s sports or in other fields — you have to realize that there is always work to do, and you want to be the hardest working person in whatever you do, and you put yourself in a position to be successful.”

I am grateful to all of the coaches and managers who have travelled with the teams of students who are here. Your commitment to their growth as young people and to developing their skills is appreciated. I know that the players appreciate you and value your inputs in their lives. It is a privilege for you to work with young people. I thank our officials who will serve over this weekend, on the court or beside it on the technical table. We cannot enjoy our sport without your passion and dedication, and we appreciate you.

To all those boys participating in this event, your commitment to, and your passion for the sport has been rewarded not only by your victories, but by everything else you and all students have worked so hard for both on and off the court. The values of camaraderie, team spirit, sportsmanship, determination, commitment to excellence, and perseverance, are skills that extend beyond the courts of play – these are life skills that will provide a solid foundation for future success for all of you.

To all of our boys who are representing their schools, my plea is that you show your gratitude to the officials, managers and coaches, but also to staff who will provide you with meals and cooldrinks, or medical care over the weekend. And do not forget your parents who have supported you to get to playing this sport that you love, and for providing opportunities and love for you to succeed.

We know that a festival like this does not happen without many people in the background. I wish to offer my thanks to our ground and security staff, catering and cleaning staff, our College teaching staff and our helpful students, for all of their efforts. I particularly want to give a big shout out to our Festival Organising Committee, our Basketball Staff and our Basketball Parents Committee for their many hours of planning and executing to ensure that you can enjoy this festival. I am grateful to Mrs Monique Diez for her leadership of our committee.

My final, and very big thank you, is to our generous sponsors of the Festival.

Welcome, enjoy your time with us, find joy in doing what you love, and stay healthy. Let the games begin.

Take care. Work hard. Be nice.

On behalf of St Stithians Girls’ College, I am thrilled to extend a warm welcome to you and your team to the St Stithians U16 Basketball Tournament. As the anticipation builds and the excitement grows, we are excited to host 16 teams in total, including teams from Eswatini and Zambia.

This tournament promises to be an exhilarating showcase of skill, sportsmanship, and teamwork. We appreciate your commitment to the game, and we look forward to witnessing the incredible competition and camaraderie that will unfold over the coming days.

A heartfelt thanks go out to all the teams, coaches, officials, and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make this tournament possible. In particular, I acknowledge the commitment of our parents’ committee under the leadership of Mrs Mhangami, as well as the Saints Events and Communications team for their organisation and hard work which has gone into this tournament.  Your commitment to the sport is truly admirable, and it's because of your efforts that we can come together to enjoy the incredible excitement basketball has to offer this weekend.

To the athletes, remember that you are not just representing your teams, but also your communities, schools and the sport of basketball as a whole. Play your best, but also play with respect for your opponents and the rules of the game. To the spectators, thank you for being here to support our youngsters. Your energy and enthusiasm in the stands are essential to creating an electric atmosphere.

Let us come together, One and All in the true spirit of sportsmanship, valuing the friendships we make and the lessons we learn along the way. I trust that you will enjoy this celebration of sport with us.

Dear One & All

Each year, as I prepare this message, I am reminded of the incredible privilege we all have to be part of the Saints’ Basketball Family.

This year our Annual U16 Tournament participants include 26 teams at the Boys’ College and 16 teams at the Girls’ College.  It's the second year we have joined forces for a long weekend of basketball, which is no small feat!

We welcome all who have travelled from other provinces and across national borders to join us in Johannesburg and those based in the sunny province of Gauteng.  (Many prayers already sent for favourable weather as I type this!)

In preparation, the Saints Basketball community has stepped up, shared ideas, moved mountains, pulled in contacts and operated as one of the most formidable teams with whom I have had the pleasure of working. No task too small and no ask too great – all met with the passion and commitment that defines this group of parents, St Stithians’ staff and basketball tournament planning experts, who I have had the pleasure of dealing with during the planning and execution processes over the past months.

Thank  you to our incredible sponsors, who raise a hand year after year to support this event and our teams, with special thanks to our new sponsors which include Karebo (we can play after dark!), McDonald’s (we have team kit!), Naturally Nice (participants’ t-shirts), Lamberti Physiotherapy (Rehab & Recovery) and Spalding (basketballs).

To the players, we wish you an exceptional weekend of balling.

Finally, this weekend is not only about results. How you win or lose matters most.

God bless.

Monique Diez

ST STITHIANS u16 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT 2023

Our St Stithians u16 Basketball Tournament 2023 it was a celebration of basketball action and talent.  Our 2023 Tournament played host to 5th year of the Boys' College Tournament and the Inaugural Girls' College Tournament and both were a huge success. Due to weather challenges, the Boys’ Tournament was moved from our Saints Basketball precinct to the Brixton Community Centre and the Girls’ Tournament was hosted by St Peter's College and Sacred Heart College. The weather did not dampen the spirits of our players or supporters and it was a wonderful weekend of basketball action and camaraderie from our participating teams.

Congratulations to St John’s College for winning the Boys’ Tournament and Sacred Heart College for winning the inaugural Girls’ Tournament with some truly inspired play.  We share with you below the Results and Final Placings Documents which include the All Star Teams for both the Boys' and Girls' Tournaments.

Basketball - U16 Basketball Tournament (By Seann Rubinek, Director of Basketball for St Stithians Boys’ College)

The 3rd Annual St Stithians College U16 Basketball Tournament has come and gone and what a Tournament it was! After three days of intense basketball, Soweto’s very own Morris Isaacson High School pipped St John’s College 63-60 in what is being called the most thrilling and entertaining tournament final so far!

24 teams from, Gauteng, KZN, Western Cape, and North-West provinces, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Namibia took part. Interesting to note that all teams lost at least one game in the group stages which shows the high level of competition exhibited this year. From tip-off on Friday morning teams put in their all. Our Boys’ College U16s had a tough time with a loss in their first game against St Benedict’s College, however they recovered well and went on to beat Michaelhouse convincingly and breezed past Queens College. But it wasn’t to be in the quarter finals where they faced a tough fired up Jeppe side. The boys lost 15 - 25.

The finals though between Morris Isaacson and St John’s College proved to be a most thrilling affair with the lead going back and forth and the teams giving their all. However Morris Isaacson could not be denied as they held onto a slight 63 - 60 lead till the final whistle sending the crowd into a frenzy. Great gesture by Morris Isaacson when they formed a tunnel for St John’s College during the prize giving. After three years of being sponsored as our Development Team, what a moment it was when the young boys from Soweto lifted the Cup at the most prestigious U16 Basketball Tournament thus closing the curtain on the 2020 St Stithians U16 Basketball Tournament.
