The USA STEM-focused school tour to San Francisco and Los Angeles provided an enriching journey through science, technology, engineering, mathematics, arts, and history. With a thoughtfully designed itinerary, the trip blended educational content with engaging activities, offering students hands-on learning experiences through visits to innovative institutions, interactive museums, and historic landmarks.

On Sunday, 11 August 2024, a group of 40 boys and girls, accompanied by three teachers, Mr Pfarelo Mphaphuli (Boys’ College), Ms Zoe Bibbings (Girls’ College), and Mr Paul Statham (Girls’ College), embarked on their journey to the USA. The first destination was San Francisco, where the group began their exploration in Chinatown, delving into the cultural and historical significance of one of North America's oldest and largest Chinese communities. Dinner at the Great Eastern Restaurant introduced students to authentic Chinese cuisine, while their stay at Hotel Zephyr provided a comfortable base near the city's key attractions.

The group took a ferry ride to Alcatraz Island, where a guided tour brought the history and engineering significance of this infamous former prison to life. A walk to Pier 15 led students to the Exploratorium, where they engaged with hands-on exhibits that explored scientific principles such as physics, biology, and art, fostering an interactive approach to STEM learning. Later, a stroll to Pier 39 offered a chance to observe San Francisco's famous sea lions, while the Aquarium of the Bay showcased the local marine ecosystem. The day ended with a lively meal at the Hard Rock Cafe, blending rock history with entertainment.

A highlight was the visit to Silicon Valley, where students explored major tech company campuses, gaining insight into the heart of technological innovation. At the Computer History Museum, the evolution of computing technology was brought to life, while the Learning Lab provided interactive activities in computer science. Exploring Fisherman’s Wharf added historical context to the city’s maritime significance, and a dinner at Bistro Boudin offered the unique taste of San Francisco’s famous sourdough bread.

Additional stops in San Francisco included the Bay Model Visitor’s Center, where students learned about regional water systems and environmental engineering through a large-scale hydraulic model of the San Francisco Bay. A tour of the University of California, Berkeley, exposed students to cutting-edge research facilities at one of the world’s top universities. Finally, the Chabot Space & Science Center provided interactive exhibits and a planetarium show that expanded students' knowledge of space science and astronomy.

The group then travelled overnight by coach to Los Angeles, ready to explore the next set of exciting destinations. The day began with breakfast at Denny's, fuelling everyone for a bicycle tour along Venice Beach, where students enjoyed both physical activity and sightseeing. A visit to Exposition Park allowed students to explore the Natural History Museum and the California Science Center, which featured extensive exhibits on dinosaurs, fossils, and other STEM-related topics.

A tour of the La Brea Tar Pits provided a unique view into prehistoric Los Angeles, showcasing ongoing paleontological work. The California Science Center's interactive exhibits and a whale-themed IMAX film offered further STEM insights, followed by a family-style Italian dinner at Buca di Beppo. Students ended the day with a leisurely visit to Universal City Walk, filled with entertainment and shopping opportunities.

The next day, the group visited the Griffith Observatory, where they enjoyed stunning views of Los Angeles and an engaging planetarium show focused on astronomy. The excitement continued with a visit to Universal Studios Hollywood, where thrilling rides, behind-the-scenes tours, and interactive experiences related to film production captivated the students. Finally, the Hollywood Walking Tour explored iconic landmarks such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the TCL Chinese Theatre, providing a glimpse into the heart of the entertainment industry.

The USA STEM tour was a highly successful educational experience, offering students a well-balanced itinerary that combined interactive STEM learning with engaging cultural experiences. The tour deepened students' understanding of various fields, from technology and engineering to natural history. The success of the trip would not have been possible without the dedication of Mercury 80 personnel, including Pam, Greg, Gabriella, and Nicole (SA tour agents), as well as chaperones Joshua and Sharon from STEM USA. Their enthusiasm and support were crucial in making this journey both enjoyable and memorable.
