The Importance of Art n Grade R

June 27, 2025 | Junior Preparatory

In Grade R, art is so much more than colourful fun - it is a powerful tool for learning and development. Through drawing, painting, cutting, moulding and assembling, children build vital fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and control. These hands-on activities also strengthen visual perceptual abilities like recognising shapes, sizes, and spatial relationships - skills that support early reading and maths.

Listening to instructions during art enhances auditory processing, helping children follow sequences and understand descriptive language. Each activity is thoughtfully designed to promote critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity, encouraging children to plan, make choices and express their ideas visually.

Art also nurtures emotional and social growth. Taking turns, sharing materials and appreciating each other’s work builds empathy and teamwork. Completing a project boosts confidence and gives children a strong sense of pride.

One recent highlight was our "A dot can be…" activity, where children reimagined a simple dot into anything they could dream of - a sun, a flower, or even a doorway to a new world. This open-ended task encouraged curiosity, imagination and original thinking.
