“The tests we face in life's journey are not to reveal our weaknesses but to help us discover our inner strengths. We can only know how strong we are when we strive and thrive beyond the challenges we face.” - Kemi Sogunle

In just our third appearance at the Nedbank Football Tournament, our 1st Football Team has managed to overcome the odds and again finish the tournament as champions. From 21 to 24 September the top football teams gathered in Bloemfontein for the prestigious tournament, and our young side, determined to defend their title, rose to the challenge at every turn.

In the group stages, the team showcased their skill, spirit, and teamwork, advancing through tough competition to the knockout rounds. The quarter-final saw a commanding 4-1 victory over Brebner, with every player delivering their best performance. But it was in the semi-finals against Kimberley Boys High that the team’s grit truly shone through. A nerve-wracking penalty shootout had the Boys’ College on edge, but they emerged victorious with a 4-2 win, securing their spot in the finals and the chance to defend their championship title.

The final against Robinvale from Cape Town was set to be a thrilling encounter.

The stage was set for the final showdown, but it was not going to be easy. Robinvale struck first, scoring early in the second half to put the defending champions on the back foot. Yet, as they had done all tournament, the Boys’ College team dug deep, refusing to let the game slip away.

With the clock ticking down, Jason Oliver, who had been a standout throughout the tournament, scored the equalizer, igniting hope and energy within the team. As the match inched closer to penalties, Captain Liam Slattery seized the moment. Exemplifying the never-give-up attitude that had carried the team this far, Slattery stepped up in the dying moments of the second half and delivered the winning goal, securing a dramatic 2-1 victory.

For the second year in a row, the Boys’ College lifted the Nedbank Grey College Football Tournament trophy, a testament to their resilience, skill, and determination.

This victory was not just about talent on the field but about the unity and support off the field. The coaching staff, led by Football TIC Samuel Lebabo, played a crucial role in guiding the team to victory, while the unwavering support from the Football parents, students, and staff created an environment where champions could flourish.

The team’s accomplishments were further highlighted by individual awards: Jason Oliver was named Striker of the Tournament, while Will Henson was crowned Joint Top Goal Scorer. These accolades, alongside the tournament trophy, reflect the hard work and dedication that defines the Boys’ College football culture.

As we celebrate this back-to-back championship, we look forward to the future with excitement, knowing that this team’s journey is far from over. The heart, perseverance, and winning mentality of these boys have made them champions once again, and there is no doubt that more triumphs lie ahead.
