Embracing acts of kindness and service to mark Mandela Day

July 26, 2024 | Boys’ College

Nelson Mandela once said, “There can be no greater gift than that of giving one's time and energy to helping others without expecting anything in return.” This profound sentiment lies at the heart of Mandela Day, celebrated each year at the Boys’ College. This year was no different, as our grade 8 students immersed themselves in a day filled with engaging and meaningful activities under the guidance of staff, dedicated organizations, and the Parents' Samaritan Group (PSG).

Mandela Day reflects our commitment to community service and the values that Nelson Mandela embodied. The day's activities, which were primarily skills-based, aimed to create educational products for underprivileged preschools and communities. The boys participated in an hourly rotational system, ensuring that each student experienced a variety of tasks, promoting teamwork, creativity, and compassion.

  1. Making Blankets for Animal Shelters. Under the careful guidance of the PSG, students created blankets for local animal shelters. This activity not only provided comfort to animals in need but also taught the boys the value of empathy and kindness towards all living beings.
  2. Creating Scarfs and Tin Utensils for the Homeless. In another PSG-led initiative, students crafted scarves and repurposed tin cans into utensils. These practical items were intended to help the homeless, demonstrating to the boys how simple actions can have a significant impact on someone’s life.
  3. Reflective Talk on Mandela Day Philosophy with Rev Kekana and Mr Ramtahar. A crucial part of the day was a reflective session on the philosophy behind Mandela Day. Students engaged in discussions about the importance of service, philanthropy, and community development. This talk aimed to instill a deeper understanding of why their efforts matter and how they contribute to the larger community.
  4. Educational Toymaking Workshop by CLOTHES TO GOOD. The boys participated in making Monster Munch and Visual Shakers, educational toys for schools in Diepsloot. This workshop not only fostered creativity but also emphasized the importance of providing educational resources to underprivileged children.

The spirit of Mandela Day extends beyond a single day. Throughout the year, the Boys’ College continues with various House initiatives, including vegetable and other collections, to support those in need. These ongoing efforts highlight our sustained commitment to community service and the continuous application of Mandela’s principles in our everyday actions.

Mandela Day at the Boys’ College was more than just a day of activities; it was a profound learning experience for our grade 8 students. Through their participation, they not only acquired practical skills but also learned the importance of giving back to the community. Their collaborative efforts and generous contributions of time and resources positively impacted those in need, embodying Mandela's spirit of selflessness and service to humanity.

As we reflect on Mandela Day, we are reminded of the enduring legacy of Nelson Mandela and the importance of instilling his values in future generations. The Boys’ College remains committed to fostering a culture of service, empathy, and community engagement among our students. By continuing to honour Mandela’s legacy, we empower our students to make a difference in the world, one act of kindness at a time.

Our sincere gratitude goes to the staff and parents involved in making Mandela Day a success. Their dedication and generosity ensured that the day was not only memorable but also transformative for our students.
