August Service Project inspires our students and communities

September 10, 2024 | Boys’ College

During the first week of the August holidays, a dedicated group of nearly 30 boys, accompanied by several of our staff members, participated in community service at various homes for vulnerable residents.

Their first stop was the Gerald Fitzpatrick House, a care home for the elderly. Many of the residents live with very little and rely on the generosity of others. Our students brought joy to the residents through performances in drama, poetry, and music, as well as engaging in heartfelt conversations. They also assisted with tasks in the gardens, kitchen, and storeroom.

The students then visited San Salvador and Forest Farm, both homes are for individuals living with physical and intellectual disabilities. At San Salvador, they performed interactive dances, shared music, and contributed in the workshop and gardens. At Forest Farm, they provided assistance in the Art Room and at the residents’ workshop, continuing to lift spirits.

These experiences are invaluable for our students, as they provide opportunities to learn about disabilities and to appreciate their own talents. The interactions also challenge misconceptions and stereotypes, as the students ask insightful questions and gain a deeper understanding of the realities faced by people with disabilities. This, in turn, helps them develop empathy, sensitivity, and a more well-rounded sense of healthy masculinity.

We extend our sincere thanks to the parents, staff, and boys who supported this meaningful initiative.
