May 30, 2024 | Boys’ College

From 2 – 5 May 2024, the Boys’ College 2nd Team Hockey embarked on an enriching hockey tour to Umhlanga, competing in a tournament hosted by Reddam House Umhlanga. This tour offered the team a chance to face high-level competition, foster team chemistry, and gain valuable insights about the game. The boys concluded the tournament with commendable results, finishing 3rd in the pool games and 4th overall.

Despite dominating the game with numerous circle entries, the team suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat to Reddam House Bedfordview due to a late goal by the opponents. This initial loss, however, was a valuable learning experience in a high-stakes environment, slightly denting team morale.

The boys put up a strong performance against Ashton College, resulting in a 0-0 draw. The evenly matched game helped boost the team’s dynamics and unity, setting a positive tone for the subsequent matches.

The final match of day one against Reddam House Umhlanga ended in another goalless draw. Despite not scoring, the team's confidence grew as they demonstrated solid play, preparing them well for the crucial match against Westville on day two.

The pressure was on as the boys needed a win to advance to the semi-finals. The early morning game-watching session heightened their nerves, but their determination paid off with a 1-0 victory against Westville Boys, securing their 3rd place finish in the pool.

Entering the semi-finals with confidence, the team faced a tough match against Ashton College. Despite a strong defence, they conceded a goal in the first half, ultimately losing 0-1. In the 3rd/4th place playoff against Westville, both teams were evenly matched, resulting in a 0-0 draw. The subsequent penalty shootout saw the boys perform admirably. However, a retake awarded to Westville in sudden death led to a 0-1 defeat, placing the team 4th overall.

On the field, the team executed plays with precision and showcased impressive teamwork. Their success was not limited to the game; their camaraderie off the field was equally remarkable. The strong bonds formed through shared experiences translated into cohesive on-field performance, highlighting their collective goal-oriented spirit.

Special recognition goes to Stefanie van Schalkwyk, MIC: Hockey and the team manager, for organizing team-building activities that significantly enhanced the boys' off-field relationships. These activities not only strengthened their bonds but also positively impacted their on-field dynamics, making the downtime enjoyable and productive.

The Umhlanga Tournament was a resounding success, significantly contributing to the team's goals and preparation for future competitions. The team played competitive hockey, demonstrating resilience and adaptability. Tours like these are crucial in building depth and skill in the hockey program, contributing to the long-term success of St Stithians hockey. The lessons learned on this tour regarding strengths and areas for improvement will undoubtedly fortify the team as they progress through the season.
