We are delighted to announce that our 2020 Matrics have excelled in the IEB’s matriculation examinations. The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) offers a rigorous assessment of the National Senior Certificate curriculum, preparing our students well for tertiary study. We will be highlighting the achievements of our top performers below. We wish also to stress our pride in each matriculant who has done their best. We thank our teachers, parents and community for pulling together with our students to enable them to achieve excellence and make a world of difference, especially during what was a particularly challenging year.

Our philosophy of learning and teaching promotes an academic culture that seeks to meet and extend the needs and styles of each student, enabling personalised and meaningful learning to take place. We pride ourselves on this approach, which seeks to optimise individual learning across the academic spectrum and includes enrolling a number of students with identified barriers to learning. We are proud of the top academic achievers, among the best in the country and whose results are documented individually, as well as of each student who has excelled against personal benchmarks.

Matric is a significant milestone on a long journey of learning. We acknowledge the contributions of the teachers at the Preparatory Schools of St Stithians College, as well as those of other Primary Schools that educated this year’s Matric cohort. We pay tribute to the impact of Kamoka Bush School on the lives of our students on their Saints journey and look forward with anticipation to celebrating the results of our Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy Saturday School students.

At this time of focus on the academic gateway of Matric, we affirm our commitment to the education of young people of character, who make an impact as leaders and citizens, shaped by a Methodist ethos. Academic learning is complemented by  a diverse and highly successful sporting, cultural, outdoor education and community engagement curriculum.

St Stithians College describes itself as a proudly South African school. This pride is central to our identity and together with our Methodist ethos and values, we were called in 2020 to stand on the bedrock of all that we hold dear. We are immensely proud of the young men and women of character who stood firm and who leave this College as the Class of 2020 to make their contributions to our beloved country and beyond.

Message from the Head of School

To the Boys’ College Matric Class of 2020 - A Message from Mr du Toit about the Matric Results

Dear Matrics

At the beginning of this year I drew inspiration from the Matric Class of 2020 in encouraging the Boys’ College to embrace our imperfections and to face our challenges this year as you did in 2020, with Courage, Compassion, Connection and Collaboratively. Thank you for the example that you set. 2020 is likely to be recognised as an inflection point in our history as it has changed the way in which we live, and pushed us to intense reflection, problem solving, action, innovation, and most importantly a belief that nothing is impossible. As I reflect on your Matric year I am very proud of each one of you and wish to congratulate you on your academic achievements which reflect your determination and grit, and which are, interestingly in such a challenging year, your best results as a cohort in your time at the College. This says a lot about your collective character. We are proud of you.

#BeStrongerOneAndAll rings true as we recognise your successes and celebrate your achievements and contributions in the Boys’ College. Your journey is made possible because of the contributions, support, encouragement and care of many people. As always, I encourage you to show gratitude and to make time to thank those who have guided you. We need to express an enormous amount of gratitude to your teachers for their care and high-quality instruction and to your families for their unwavering support and belief in you. I extend my thanks to all who have nurtured, listened, advised and pushed you along the way, including the staff in the Junior Prep and the Boys’ Prep as well as our feeder primary schools. On your behalf I also thank the Independent Examination Board, who dealt with queries and issues timeously and efficiently, and ran an examination system of the highest standard in a very challenging time.

I do wish to congratulate the students and staff at the Girls’ College on their outstanding academic achievements at the end of their Saints journey, and for their contributions beyond the classroom. As a Matric group they sought to work closely with the Boys’ College in fostering a stronger sense of community which will continue to grow and thrive well beyond 2020.

I am very grateful to you as a group of young people who have remained passionate about the College and who sought to bring change into the world. Your commitment to transformation and social justice and to mental well-being of young men will be a significant legacy that you leave here at Saints. I have enjoyed seeing you grow into young adults who have understood our call to Know Yourself, Be Yourself, and to Make Your Contribution. You are ready to lead in the world.

I shared this quote with you in your ‘Road Ahead’ meeting and wish to repeat it here for you as a reminder:

“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.” (Roy T Bennett)

As I bid you the very best for your future I trust that you will remember the lessons and values you have learnt at the Boys’ College, and that these will stand you in good stead in the challenging, uncertain but exciting times we face. Continue to Honour God, Honour Others and Honour Self and to live out John Wesley’s invitation to ‘Do all the good you can …, as long as ever you can.’

I look forward to hearing of your success in life, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

‘And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.’ (1 Corinthians 13)

Warm regards

David du Toit
