February 20, 2025 | Boys’ College

The Tres Fontes Concert Series, a collaborative initiative between St Stithians Boys' Music School and the Mzansi Chamber Music Collective, has swiftly become a beacon of world-class chamber music in Johannesburg. Since its inception in October 2024, the series has delivered unforgettable concerts featuring internationally acclaimed South African musicians and showcasing the extraordinary talent nurtured within the St Stithians community.

The series launched on October 20, 2024, with "Spectrum," a mesmerising violin and piano recital by Zanta Hofmeyr and Malcolm Nay. Held in the serene St Stithians College Chapel, the concert captivated audiences with its program of vibrant classical works, performed with breathtaking artistry. This debut event also highlighted the importance of nurturing young talent, with St Stithians Boys' College student Christiaan Theron delivering an inspiring opening performance that set the tone for the afternoon.

In December 2024, the Tres Fontes Concert Series continued with "Opus ZA," a recital celebrating the richness of contemporary South African classical music. Featuring the celebrated duo Danré Strydom (clarinet) and Grethe Nöthling (piano), the program combined the timeless beauty of Johannes Brahms’ Clarinet Sonata with contemporary South African works by Hendrik Hofmeyr, Noel Stockton, Matthijs van Dijk, and Alexander Johnson. This concert also included a guest performance by St Stithians Boys’ College student Ethan Smith, further demonstrating the series' commitment to supporting young artists.

Building on the success of its debut year, the Tres Fontes Concert Series expanded in 2025 with an ambitious program of six concerts. The first of these was "Serenade: Trios for Flute, Violin & Piano," held on February 9, 2025, featuring esteemed musicians Malané Hofmeyr-Burger (flute), Zanta Hofmeyr (violin), and Eugene Joubert (piano). The trio delivered captivating performances of rarely heard chamber music pieces by composers such as Mel Bonis, César Cui, Philippe Gaubert, and Jacques Ibert. The afternoon began with a curtain-raiser by Nicolas Schmidt, a talented Grade 10 student from St Stithians Boys' College. Nicolas's performance set a high standard for the main concert, showcasing his exceptional musical abilities.

The next concert is scheduled for Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 15:00, featuring the esteemed NWU Brass Quintet from Potchefstroom. Known for their dynamic performances and diverse repertoire, the quintet promises an afternoon of exceptional brass music. Join us at the St Stithians College Chapel for an unforgettable musical experience.

Stay tuned for more details on upcoming concerts as we continue to celebrate the richness of chamber music in Johannesburg.
