The Tutor Project - Our Students Learn Through Giving At Vuleka Primary School
While many students were unwinding during the April holiday break, a group of our passionate young minds from our Boys’ College chose a different path - one of service, learning, and leadership.
In a week-long initiative spearheaded by the Socratic Club and Academic Committee, our students partnered with Vuleka Primary School, spending five days tutoring and assisting with the education of young learners. Each day brought with it new challenges, heartwarming interactions, and powerful growth for both the Vuleka children and our own boys.
Our students stepped into the role of educators, guiding Vuleka learners in core subjects like literacy, mathematics, and reading comprehension. Far from just tutoring, they worked collaboratively with the teachers, supporting class lessons, helping manage learning activities, and offering one-on-one support to those who needed it most.
Our students also prepared learning materials, led small reading circles, and helped facilitate games that combined education and fun. For many, it was their first taste of what it truly means to be responsible for someone else's learning, and the impact was immediate.
“I never realised how much effort goes into teaching. It gave me a new respect for educators and a deeper appreciation of my education,” shared one of our students.
What made this initiative especially meaningful was the mutual growth that occurred. While the Vuleka learners gained academic support and mentorship, our boys discovered a sense of purpose, empathy, and leadership. The interactions encouraged dialogue and opened eyes to the diverse experiences of young students in South Africa. For some, it sparked an interest in teaching or social development work; for others, it was a reminder of the privilege and power of a good education.
At the end of the week, students from both schools came together to reflect on their experiences, sharing stories of connection, laughter, and newfound confidence. Several Vuleka learners described feeling “smart,” “important,” and “seen,” while our students left with full hearts and a deeper understanding of their role as servant leaders.
The Tutor Project encouraged growth on both sides. Our students developed leadership, patience, and a sense of the responsibilities that come with teaching. For the Vuleka students, the week offered a valuable boost in literacy and numeracy through personalised, engaging support.
This project stands as a shining example of our commitment to servant leadership, academic excellence, compassion, growth, and community upliftment. It reminds us all that education is not only about what happens in the classroom, but how we take our knowledge into the world to serve others.
