SA Rowing Champs Glory

March 07, 2023 | Boys’ College

What an incredible weekend at the SA Rowing Champs 2023! Our phenomenal Rowers claim seven Gold medals, including the first U19 Gold medal since 2001, and 1st 8 Gold medal since 1994, three silver medals, with many of our crews performing at their personal best level across the age groups. The man behind this revitalization is the Director of Rowing, Athenkosi Hlekani, as he celebrates and reflects on the history our Rowing club has made. The work on this history-breaking feat, started several months back, with many early morning ergo sessions, hours on a bus, the heat of the day on the water, reflective mental sessions with Lou de Jager, Boys’ College Sports Scientist, and the heartache of the 2022 Boatrace final to fuel a desire and passion to make history. They have proven to be “mentality monsters” in the heat of battle. The longest waits are the most worthwhile waits - with each rower having to be the very best version of themselves mentally and physically to achieve this feat. Well done to all our Rowers on exceptional results.

Our congratulations also go to the Girls’ College rowers on their inspiring performances this weekend. Thank you to everyone that helped make this past weekend the success it was, including our Saints Supporters, staff, and students, and a very special thanks to RMB for their ongoing commitment to growing rowing.
