If you happened to pass by Dace Hall on the evening of 9 September, you would have been infected by the energy that pulsated from within. That’s because the Grade 8 and 9 isiZulu and Sesotho students from the Girls’ and Boys’ Colleges, under the guidance of their teachers, had put together a spectacular celebration of the Zulu and Basotho cultures. It was a fitting way to kick-start Heritage Month.

Months of preparation by dedicated staff and students from both schools culminated in an event that took one’s breath away. Students showcased their talents by presenting a variety of songs, dances, poetry recitations and dialogues. Teachers joined in the celebration and added their unique voices in the form of praise poems, songs and dances. The cheers and ululations from the crowd were a strong indication of how much everyone enjoyed the event.

Traditional meals served on the night were delectable and encouraged those not used to them to be a little more adventurous. It was a lip-smacking and tasteful end to the event.

The success of the night bodes well for future synergy undertakings between the Colleges and the languages. This looks set to become an annual occurrence and it will undoubtedly grow in stature so that the wonderful diversity and richness of all our cultures take centre stage.
