Building with Imagination in Grade 1

Junior Preparatory, Campus

Our Grade 1 students recently embarked on an exciting 3D shapes project that beautifully combined creativity, problem-solving and hands-on learning. After exploring the properties of 3D shapes in class, the students were challenged to apply their knowledge in a meaningful way. For homework, they were asked to design and construct a structure of their choice using a variety of 3D shapes. This open-ended task encouraged deep thinking and imagination as they planned what to build and decided which shapes would best suit their designs.

The students used a wonderful assortment of materials from cardboard boxes, plastic bottles and recycled containers to paper rolls and craft sticks turning everyday items into imaginative masterpieces. Their creativity truly shone through as they designed castles with cylindrical towers, as well as boats and rockets ready for space adventures. The process not only developed their understanding of shape and structure but also nurtured perseverance, spatial awareness, and design thinking.

When the projects were completed, each student proudly presented their creation to the class, explaining their design choices and the 3D shapes they had used. This was followed by a lively question-and-answer session where their peers engaged with thoughtful curiosity. It was inspiring to see the growing confidence and clear communication skills on display.

To celebrate their efforts, all the beautiful structures were showcased in the Dace Hall, where the entire Junior Preparatory family could admire the imagination, creativity and learning that went into every piece.

We are grateful to the parents for their contribution in supporting their little ones.
