Beyond the Score Music Workshop

What an extraordinary day of music, inspiration, and discovery at the Beyond the Score 2025 workshop hosted by St Stithians Boys’ College Music Department.

Last Friday, passionate music educators and students from across the country gathered to dive deep into the 2025 IEB prescribed works. Insightful presentations by Sue Cock, Martinette Ronquest, Jaline Oelofse, Elsabé Fourie, and Ceri Moelwyn-Hughes brought fresh perspectives to masterpieces like Don Giovanni, Erlkönig, West Side Story, USA Jazz, South African Urban Music, and Beethoven’s iconic 5th Symphony.

The day truly came alive with breathtaking live performances - all brilliantly led by the incomparable conductor Kutlwano Masote, whose dynamic direction infused every note with energy and emotion. A standout moment was baritone Chris Vale’s powerful rendition of Erlkönig, accompanied by Eugene Joubert, which left the audience spellbound.

The jazz quintet was a clear favourite, delivering an electrifying performance of Meadowlands that had everyone tapping their feet and fully engaged. Their virtuosity and vibrant style brought South African Urban Music to life, sparking excitement even among students who don’t take music as a subject. It was wonderful to see these boys learning and enjoying music beyond the classroom walls.
