Congratulations to the Girls' College!

"On behalf of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, it gives me great pleasure to congratulate your school on being recognised as a Circle Of Excellence School (COE) for 2016.  Membership of the Foundation's COE Schools is limited to the top 100 South African schools as measured by the Foundation's criteria and offers your school the opportunity to nominate learners for the 2016 selection process.  The Foundation provides full financial support for students who want to pursue tertiary studies at selected universities. This opportunity, known as the Allan Gray Orbis Fellowship, explores entrepreneurial mindset development building on the base of a solid academic platform.

As one of the best performing schools in the country, we would like to offer your school an opportunity to nominate 3 students to apply for the fellowship."

Congratulations to the Girls' College Maths Staff

St Stithians College hosted two Teacher focused problem solving workshops towards the end of term The Prep held theirs on Friday 4th & Saturday 5th March and the High Schools on Monday 7th & Tuesday 8th March.  We (all four schools) have made Problem Solving and the Teaching of Pedagogy related to Problem Solving,  a strategic goal for 2016. This is a synergistic opportunity where all of the staff were involved in the organisation and management making this workshop a success.

What the course entailed can best be answered in the FAQ below:

What does the course involve?

SAMF (the South African Mathematics Foundation) have created courses for teachers to help them problem solve better and teach problem solving better - aligned, in part, to Olympiad training. These courses are run by members of SAMF for which there is official certification. The two day course requires delegates to complete an assignment followed by a competency test. Professor Alwyn Olivier facilitated both workshops at Saints.

Who was invited?

All of our internal staff were invited, including Maths interns. They had to register, like external delegates, using the online registration process. The invite was also extended to schools in our region / cluster. Unfortunately we had to limit each workshop to 70 delegates.

The costs?

We charged each delegate R400. The charge covered the presentation of the course, resource materials and catering for both days. This was a SAMF endorsed and sponsored event and SAMF paid for flights, accommodation and presenter fees. SAMF also donated R50 per delegate, per day towards catering costs. CASIO our loyal supporters also offered to donate laptop bags for each delegate, lanyards for name tags and calculators and watches as prizes.

Where was it held?

The Prep workshop was hosted in the Dace Hall and the HS workshop in the GC gymnasium.

The local organising committee, consisted of members from each Mathematics Department at the four schools (excl. JP), and they met every Tuesday in the GC Staffroom  to discuss progress. It was a wonderful opportunity to upskill our Mathematics staff and interns, showcase our wonderful facilities and further advance Saints Mathematics in the public domain.
