Saints well represented at the SA Maths Team Competition

September 14, 2016 | Girls’ College

On Saturday 10 September St Stithians College hosted 80 of Gauteng’s most talented mathematics students to compete in the SA Maths Team Competition. Only very talented mathematicians who had progressed to the 3rd round of the Mathematics Olympiad were considered for selection. These students also attended the training sessions hosted by Wits University under the supervision of Dr Belinda Huntley, who has been a driving force behind the Siyanqoba talent programme. The competition has a junior and senior section with an individual written component and a team component. Each team (10 members) then compete against teams from across the country in order to determine the National champions. This is a competition for the incredibly talented and it is an extreme honour to be selected to participate.

We are very proud of Grace Zhao (Gr12) and Jessica James (Gr8) who were our Girls’ College representatives in their respective Siyanqoba teams. Incidentally, Jessica was competing in the Gr9 competition. We are also very proud of our Boys’ College counterparts, David Wright and Martin Currin, who were placed first and second respectively in the senior Wits Premier team. David scored 100% in the individual paper which is an amazing feat!

Overall the Gauteng Senior team was placed 2nd, just behind the team from Western Province and the Gauteng Junior team came fourth.

We look forward to going for gold in 2017.SAMTC 2016 Result
