Grade 7 Market Day: Learning, Interaction and Fun at GP!
Our Grade 7s held their highly-anticipated Market Day on Friday 2 October, and what a spectacular, absolutely fabulous school day it was indeed. But this event is far more than a fun entrepreneurial encounter. It is a valuable educational experience that allows students to apply concepts and skills learnt in Economic Management Sciences to authentic situations. Through planning, budgeting, marketing, selling and evaluating their businesses, the girls gain practical insight into how economic principles operate in everyday life.
A key focus of Economic Management Sciences (EMS) is developing financial literacy, a critical life skill that empowers informed financial decisions. During the Market Day project, the Grade 7s are required to create business plans, calculate costs, determine selling prices, forecast profits, manage budgets, and keep financial records. These activities provide opportunities to develop a practical understanding of money management, entrepreneurship and responsible financial decision-making.
The project also aligns strongly with our school's Cognitive Enrichment Advantage (CEA) programme. Girls are challenged to think critically, solve problems creatively, and make strategic decisions throughout the process. They must analyse market demand, identify potential risks, adapt to changing circumstances and evaluate the success of their business ventures. These higher-order thinking skills are essential for developing adaptable, innovative and resilient young people.
Through collaborative planning and practical application, students experience the direct connection between classroom learning and real-world enterprise. They learn that successful businesses require careful planning, teamwork, perseverance and sound financial management. The Market Day project therefore not only strengthens EMS knowledge but also nurtures confidence, independence and entrepreneurial thinking.
Grade 7 Market Day provides our girls with an engaging learning opportunity that prepares them for future academic challenges and responsible participation in the economy.
