Planting our Legacy - Arbor Month

October 07, 2020 | Campus

September is Arbor month and this was celebrated at St Stithians College with three official tree planting events that took place across the Campus during the month. The first of these took place early in September when Trishanka Thoolsi, Old Stithian (2012) and Miss Earth South Africa joined us to donate and plant four trees at our Peter Place entrance and around the new road area. It was so wonderful to welcome Trish back to Saints - we are so grateful for this generous donation and thank her for continuing to #InspireExcellence and #MakeAWorldOfDifference.

Later in the month, our Boys’ and Girls’ College Matrics planted trees to commemorate the culmination of their time at St Stithians College. It is a legacy which the students will enjoy for years to come as when one plants a tree, it is a legacy for future generations to enjoy.

Trees occupy an important physical and symbolic space on our campus. One of which is the stained glass window which is found at the back of the Chapel. It is an arching of coloured glass fragments that all emanate from a single, yellow round sphere. It is meant to depict the parable of the mustard seed: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”

The tree planting holds a special significance for each of the Matrics and we are hugely grateful to them for leaving this legacy. Thanks must also go to Pauline Dickson,Old Stithian, Councillor David Potter, Courtney Watson, Elana Shaw, Thando Bili in Operations and Jantjies Masimula and his Servest Team for their role in making these occasions soseamless and memorable.
