Mathematics it's not a boring place to be

“Mathematics has beauty and romance. It's not a boring place to be, the mathematical world. It's an extraordinary place; it's worth spending time there.” – Marcus du Sautoy

Boys from Grade 4 enjoyed the practical application of mathematics. Mr. Noonan created a great deal of excitement and enjoyment of measurement as the lesson allowed for a hands on approach, using trundle wheels.

Boys were informed that the trundle wheel works by having a wheel which has a circumference of exactly 1 metre, hence one revolution of the wheel equates to 1 metre of distance travelled on the ground. Every time the wheel makes a rotation, the wheel produces an audible click which is then counted and therefore the number of clicks that are counted by the user is approximately the number of metres travelled. Due to the design of the trundle wheel, it is not always moved in a straight line and this inevitably adds on extra distance to the final reading.

In addition, group discussions focused on accuracy of measurement and factors which could influence final readings.

While measurement of our school areas was enjoyed, the measurement and final destination of Spur proved to be the "deal breaker".

The group enjoyed a meal at Spur, where further opportunities for maths learning was created as calculations to pay bills, gratuities, percentage of a bill were a few of the interesting calculations.

A great time was had by all. The boys enjoyed the learning and the treat, while staff, enjoyed the time with a few boys within a different learning environment.
