Grade 7 Camp Wildside: A Journey of Adventure, Courage and Connection
Our Grade 7 girls embarked on their Camp Wildside adventure with hearts full of excitement and anticipation. From the first day, Wildside became a space of discovery, courage and belonging.
Day One began with a memorable visit to the Elephant Sanctuary in Hartbeespoort. The girls fed and gently petted elephants, listening attentively to an educational talk that reminded them of the importance of respect for animals, nature and the world beyond themselves. On arriving at camp, they settled into their rooms, enjoyed a delicious lunch and spent the afternoon completing swim tests before diving into waterslides and pool fun. The day ended with a festive braai and a lively evening of dancing, singing and games, where friendships began to blossom.
Day Two unfolded with energy and purpose. The first group set off on a game drive in Pilanesberg National Park, observing wildlife in its natural habitat. Later, our girls took part in raft-building, a challenge that tested teamwork and resilience. A leadership talk linked to the upcoming Grade 7 theme sparked curiosity and excitement. The evening brought a cultural spectacle celebrating Setswana traditions, with drumming, dance, and art, followed by the making of friendship bracelets; a symbol of connection and belonging.
Day Three balanced adventure with service. The girls rotated through activity stations including a Sensory Trail, Obstacle Course and Activity Island, each designed to build trust, courage and teamwork. A reptile show sparked fascination and respect for the natural world. In the afternoon, the girls participated in Heart of Saints, creating enrichment toys for animals at the predator park. Later, they practised their war cry with pride and shared dinner with St Mary’s Waverley School, bonding through laughter and friendly rivalry. The evening closed with a spectacular fire show and quiet tutor group reflections.
Day Four was a fun-filled excursion to Sun City. Though the morning began with rain, the skies cleared to reveal a beautiful, sunny day. Girls and teachers embraced the Valley of the Waves, tackling slides that challenged them to overcome their fears. Courage was celebrated in every splash and scream of delight. The day ended with an afterparty of singing and dancing before everyone collapsed into much-needed sleep.
Day Five brought the camp to a gentle close. The girls woke early for a bush walk, soaking in the quiet beauty of nature one last time. Breakfast followed, and then came the emotional goodbyes with hugs, laughter and tears as they reflected on the journey they had shared.
Camp Wildside was more than just adventure; it was a journey of growth. The girls learned how to overcome fears, whether standing before an elephant, braving a waterslide, or speaking up in leadership activities. They bonded deeply with one another, forming friendships that will last long beyond camp. They also connected meaningfully with their tutor teachers, who guided, supported and celebrated them every step of the way.
Above all, Camp Wildside reminded them that courage, kindness and community are the true treasures of growing up.
