Girls' College - Festival of Excellence in Dramatic Arts (FEDA)

June 04, 2024 | Girls’ College | Author: Taryn Pillay,

St Stithians Girls’ College entered three plays into this year’s Festival of Excellence in the Dramatic Arts (FEDA). The Dramatic Arts Department are very proud that our productions are entirely student-led, from the script to the direction, the lighting and sound design. We applaud the commitment and dedication of the casts of crews of “When the Sun Dreams, the Moon Sings”, written and directed by Taliyah Thomas(Grade 12) and “A Simple Story” devised by the cast and crew and directed by Jayden Benard (Grade 12) for their moving plays on the impact of the patriarchy and generational trauma, respectively.

We congratulate the cast and crew of "Eish!", devised by the cast and crew and directed by Bukelwa Biko (Grade 11) for their selection to the FEDA finals this past Sunday. The students performed a moving piece about how women are men’s strength and yet they have no power; they are the “glue” that keeps the family together and are often overlooked because they are not the “breadwinners”. The adjudicator commented on the strong female voices in the festival, and the Girls’ College Dramatic Arts Department are proud to have encouraged our young women to make their voices heard.

“Eish!” also received the following seven nominations, and one win:

Best Ensemble

Best Original Script

Best Actor in a Female Role (Khangiwe Cele, Grade 11)

Best Actor in a Male Role (Maite Hamese, Grade 11)

Best Director (Bukelwa Biko, Grade 11)

Best Comic Performance (Kutlwano Msiza, Grade 11)

Sinqobile Sithole in Grade 12 won Best Supporting Actor in a Female Role.
