Despite the difficulties presented by COVID-19 restrictions, our young athletes continue to persevere and excel, with representation at national and provincial level.

Diving

The RSA cup and SA National age group competitions took place at St Dominics, Boksburg, from 11–15 December 2020.

Bailey Heydra won the RSA Cup for the third time in a row, with Bailey Davenport taking second place. Heydra also won the 1 m, 3 m and platform categories in her age group competitions. She also took the trophies for best overall A group (16-19 years) diver and the highest scoring dive.

Davenport placed 2nd in 1 m and 3 m.

Both divers qualified for the junior national team to represent SA at the Dresden International Youth Meet in April (though this is unlikely to happen, we remain optimistic that they will be able to participate!).

Grace Brammer placed second in the RSA Cup preliminaries before having to withdraw due to circumstances beyond her control. She placed second in the 1 m B group (14-15 years old) and first in the platform category. Grace has furthermore qualified for the SA Youth Squad.

Katherine Leschner (joining Grade 8 this year) came first in the C group (12-13 years old) on 1 m and 3 m.

Rowing

Congratulations to our five Saints GC Rowers who have been invited by the Junior International Commission to join the Junior National Training Squad!

  • Zoe Botoulas (Grade 11)
  • Brigitte Kappler (Grade 11)
  • Grace Leech (Grade 11)
  • Shelby Schoeman (Grade 12)
  • Skye Tucker (Grade 12)

We are very proud of our rowers for this invitation! Although inclusion in the National Training Squad does not guarantee national colours or inclusion in the final team, we are excited that they now form part of the selection process. These students have their eyes set on being selected as part of the Junior National Squad to tour to Plovdiv, Bulgaria for the Junior World Rowing Championships in August this year.

Netball

Amara (Amarachi) Agbai (Grade 12) was selected for the Ekurhuleni U21 Netball Team and participated in the 2020 Spar National Netball Championships, hosted by Netball South Africa in December 2020. She was the vice captain of the team and they won silver in the finals, narrowly losing 28–33 to the Johannesburg U21 team. Amara has also been selected to the U21 high-performance preliminary training squad. We are very proud of this awesome achievement!
