Exploring Simple Machines in Grade R: The Wheel and Axle

Junior Preparatory, Campus

Our Grade R students continued their exploration of the six simple machines, this time focusing on the wheel and axle. The lesson began with a quick recap of the pulley - what it is, why we use it and where we see it in everyday life. The children eagerly shared their answers, showing how well they remembered what they had learnt.

The focus then shifted to the wheel and axle and a fun question was posed: How could we move a heavy box filled with rocks from one class to the Computer Room? The children shared creative ideas - some suggested attaching wheels to the box and pulling it with a rope!

Using Duplo blocks and special pieces, the students then built their own cars, choosing from different wheels and axles. Some initially struggled to connect the wheels and axles to their car bodies, but with some problem-solving, questioning and help from friends, they figured it out. They could choose to build independently or work with a partner, fostering both creativity and collaboration.

After testing their cars, the students made improvements - swapping out wheels that didn’t roll well, adjusting axles that were too short, or lightening cars that were too heavy. The excitement built as they held a final test to see whose car could go the furthest! Beyond the fun and laughter, the children also learned valuable lessons in resilience, teamwork and good sportsmanship as they helped one another improve their designs.
