A Journey through the Boys' College - Leadership

October 01, 2021 | Boys’ College

At St Stithians Boys’ College, the underpinning philosophy of our leadership programme is the concept of serving leadership that finds its foundation in the Jesuit Leadership Principles. Furthermore, we believe that every boy has the ability to lead and can lead. The values espoused in leadership are those that will enable our students to be responsible global citizens who are role models and lead by example in their spheres of influence.

We believe that Leadership is a mutually beneficial relationship between staff, students, and the broader community. We believe that essential to Leadership is the will to learn from each other and to share with each other and that developing emotional and cultural intelligence with a clear understanding of multiple perspectives is critical.

There are a variety of opportunities for the boys to be exposed to current leadership theory and practice which makes up our Leadership in Action Programme. This is a weekly lesson where teachers and students alike grapple with the ever-changing landscape of leadership in the 21st Century. This includes innovative courses such as Critical Conversations, Mentorship, and Masculinity. The Journey of Significance forms part of the boys’ 5-year Leadership path where he travels from being a Bezant in grade 8 to a Knight in grade 12. This journey focuses on skills that develop character.

What distinguishes the leadership programme in the Boys’ College is our ability to react to innovative ideas which speak to the current challenges facing our boys’ futures and action them in experiential moments of learning. Leadership is offered to all boys in the following areas throughout the school: In all of the 7 Pillars of the school. Within their houses, committees, sports, cultural activities, clubs, and elected leadership positions. The yearly camps which each Grade is prepared for and participates in.

Therefore our Philosophy includes the following:

  • We believe that great leadership relies on the boys and staff being exposed to outstanding role models
  • We believe that the leadership program must allow the boys and staff situational and experiential leadership opportunities in the course of their College activities.
  • We believe that Leadership needs to be purposeful and overt.
  • We believe that leadership skills must be integrated into all aspects of school and home life.
  • We believe in developing skills that sustain a healthy organisation.
