The Grade 2's meet Penny Haw!

May 11, 2018 | Junior Preparatory

Penny Haw, the author of Nicko: The Tale of a Vervet Monkey on an African Farm visited the Grade 2's this morning. The children were enthralled with the stories she told of how Nicko grew up in her grandmother’s house on the farm with all her animals. His special “brother” was a puppy called Stompie! Her book is full of the stories about Nicko and his life on the farm – like the incident she read to the children about Nicko nearly being caught by Ruskie a Borzoi dog, but being rescued by the other Borzoi, Zana.

Penny took questions from the children and was encouraged by one of the children to please write more books! They begged her to tell them what happened next – but that would spoil the excitement of them hearing or reading the story themselves.

As Dr Seuss says “The more you read the more things you know. The more that you learn the more places you will go.”

The children were so fortunate to meet a “real, live” author. The book is available at bookshops around Johannesburg – many of the children can’t wait to read it – or have it read to them by their parents!
