Gr 7s Tour to Sugar Bay

The Girls’ Prep Grade 7 students spent a week at Sugar Bay Holiday Resort in Zinkwazi Beach, which offers an educational adventure that combines hands-on learning with various activities. The program emphasises skills development, environmental stewardship and personal growth, all set against a backdrop of coastal beauty.

The girls were allowed to participate in numerous activities, including stand-up paddleboarding, cycling and surf lessons, with additional opportunities for kayaking and rope courses. Professional counsellors guided participants through different skill levels, encouraging perseverance and mastery.

Collaborative activities such as indoor soccer, paintball, and field games taught our students problem-solving and communication skills. These experiences translate to academic settings, where students apply their camp-acquired resilience to overcome challenges like difficulty in a subject or group projects.

Leadership opportunities empowered the Grade 7s to practise decision-making and empathy, often under the guidance of counsellors who served as excellent mentors. The gap-year staff who are trained in child psychology and first aid, modelled positivity and responsibility, inspiring the campers to embrace their new leadership roles.

Cultural nights featured drumming, dance and crafts and exposed students to new perspectives. We celebrated Chinese New Year and engaged in Indian and Zulu cultural activities. Community engagement projects deepened ties and taught civic responsibility through hands-on outreach, with the Girls’ Prep students participating in a beach cleanup to give back to the Zinkwazi community.

The girls hiked to a campsite and spent the night sharing campfire stories, with some of our students experiencing camping for the first time.

The Grade 7s left Sugar Bay with greater independence, confidence, and interpersonal skills, which are sure to have a positive effect on their academic performance. By merging education with adventure, this experience has fostered lifelong learners who will carry newfound resilience, curiosity, and camaraderie way beyond the campfire.
