Saints Trek

September 12, 2016 | Girls’ College

Saints Trek was not only a time when 27 students would hike in the beautiful mountains of Limpopo and complete community service at the local Church. It was a time filled with memories constantly being made, crazy colour runs, waffle buying after a hard days work and special friendships becoming stronger.

Over the first 5 days, we worked at the local church. The students and teachers completed various tasks such as painting walls, cleaning, sanding and priming window frames, clearing acres of bush, removing tons of rubble, building shelves, painting a new welcome sign and service board, and creating a respectful place where the local people can now go to worship God.

Once the residential project was finished, we left for the 5-day hike. With our heavy hiking bags, the smell of sunblock in the air and the excitement almost tangible, we set off to conquer the 67km journey. During this time, we jumped off cliffs, built rafts to cross a 1km-wide dam, broke the record for the shortest time taken to summit the Iron Crown, the highest mountain in Limpopo, and constantly motivated each other to carry on. We walked far, ate well, and bonded around cooking pots and camping stoves.

It was over these 10 days of adventure on Saints Trek that we all found some new best friends and memories that will last with us forever. I am sure that if we could reverse time and go back on Trek, most of us would do it in a heartbeat.
