Marimba Tour to Argentina/Brazil Capping Ceremony

May 19, 2015 | Boys’ Preparatory

The Boys' Preparatory Marimba band is leaving shortly to attend the International "Iguazu en Concierto" in Iguazu, Argentina. This is a children's festival of Youth Orchestras & Choirs, organized by the government of the province of Misiones, Argentina.

Our Marimba Band conducted by Michael Sibanda, has been invited to represent South Africa and the African continent at this festival. This festival offers a wonderful opportunity for children around the world to share an experience that promotes deep spiritual and ethical values such as tolerance, environmental conservation, love for others and the joy of making music together.

This is an extremely prestigious opportunity for the school and the boys involved in the marimba band. Although the band has delighted many audiences locally and received numerous standing ovations, it is an honour to be able to perform internationally, representing not only their school and their country, but also the African continent.

Last Friday night the band entertained, family, friends and sponsors at our tour capping ceremony where the boys' received their tour caps. Among the special guests were Winnie Madikizela Mandela and Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

Hearing Yvonne Chaka Chaka sing "In the Jungle" and "Patta Patta" together with the band was a perfect send-off for the boys.

Alistair Stewart, the new Director of Advancement at the College, said: "These young men are about to embark on a journey of discovery. They are all instruments of peace who will spread a message of hope from the continent of Africa."

We wish them a happy, successful tour.
