Hockey Overview

November 04, 2015 | Girls’ College

A long memory filled season of huge victories and first time achievements, created the spirit in the team to overcome obstacles. The team dynamics were different this season - everyone was driven by belief and determination and this was probably the main reason for our success at one of the biggest first team tournaments hosted by St Mary's, Waverley. History was made when we placed second to Oranje at that tournament as well as being ranked 1st in Gauteng schools. The final was a buzz of excitement when Saints took the best team in South Africa (Oranje) to a golden goal finish. However, this was not the end to our success - we won every game at Saints Easter Festival making our festival a fun weekend where new friendships were created.

We were fortunate to take two sides - first team and u16 team-on tour this year to Holland and Spain where both teams benefitted hugely by the quality coaching they received in conjunction with the intense matches. This improvement was highlighted when the first team was ranked second in the national rankings during the course of the season - yet another first time achievement as a school. Due to our high rankings we were invited to The top 8 tournament held annually in Bloemfontein.

Many of our hockey players must be congratulated on making district, provincial and national teams.  The school is proud of all these achievements. Good luck to all players for next year I hope it is a bright season full of many memories and victories.
