Grade Ones Journey of Self-Discovery: "Who Am I?"
Our Grade One students have embarked on an exciting journey of self-discovery through their Big Question, "Who Am I?" This exploration encourages children to embrace their individuality, build confidence, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves.
To spark curiosity, we began by reading stories centered on self-acceptance and confidence. These books generated meaningful classroom discussions, where students reflected on what makes each person unique and why celebrating our differences is so important.
Inspired by these discussions, students used mirrors to examine their facial features, carefully observing the unique shapes, lines, and expressions that define them. This close attention to detail guided them in creating self-portraits, where they explored symmetry and transformed their reflections into art.
The exploration continued with a hands-on STEAM activity, where students sculpted "foil people" using heavy-duty foil. They experimented with light and shadows, tracing and colouring the silhouettes of their figures. Excitement filled the classroom as they brought their foil creations to life, weaving imaginative stories around their new characters.
This project has been a wonderful opportunity for students to celebrate who they are while expressing themselves through creativity and exploration!
