Grade 4 - Value the Labyrinth

March 01, 2016 | Boys’ Preparatory

As part of our values curriculum, our Grade 4 boys worked on “A-mazing – labyrinths” where they discovered the difference between a maze and a labyrinth – they realised that a labyrinth is not a maze or a puzzle to be solved but a path of meaning to be experienced. Its path is circular and intricate, but it has no dead ends. A labyrinth has one entrance -- one way in and one way out.

Have you walked our Saints Labyrinth located behind the outdoor Chapel? – A great place to Be Still and Know.

Whilst learning about Labyrinths and there meanings, we used this topic to further view the Labyrinth as a metaphor for life – it was indeed an entertaining reward to hear how some boys compared their lives to a labyrinth which at time would possibly be a more complex maze.

Our boys were guided through our labyrinth and were made aware that when we walk the path, we go around short curves and long curves; sometimes we are out on the edge, sometimes we circle around the centre.

Along the path (as it is with the prep journey) we sometimes move forward with ease, confidence and or caution. Sometimes we find the need to stop and reflect. The centre (our preparatory) is there but our path or journey through our school takes us through twists and turns. Sometimes we are (as individuals) at the heart of our school and other times, we are part of a grade which is the focus of our school; sometimes we share our path with others, and other times we don't.

No matter what, we are still on the labyrinth (Boys’ Preparatory path). To draw upon the wisdom of the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus, we need to be aware that what looks like an end point can also be a beginning point.

So yes, at times just as the end is in sight, our journey affords us another start…
