Girls' College Grade 10s Read to Grade Rs

November 03, 2023 | Junior Preparatory

Cross campus synergy events within our curriculum make Saints a very special and unique place for our students. Our Grade R children have a number of opportunities to interact with their older Saints ‘brothers and sisters’ throughout the year. The Grade Rs waited in excited anticipation for the Grade 10 Girls’ College students to come across the field to spend some time with them. This annual event is a highlight on our calendar.  The Grade 10 Girls’ College students were once again tasked with writing and illustrating original children’s books for the enjoyment of the Grade Rs. This year, the Grade 10s were challenged to write rhyming stories with distinctly South African flavour, to include neologisms and to a have a moral or lesson incorporated into their tales. The grand day arrived, much to the delight and excitement of our children as the Grade 10s arrived in the Junior Preparatory, holding their colourful, enticing story books. Hand in hand the Saints students headed off together to find a special place to share the stories. The Grade Rs were the most wonderful audience and kept asking for “more!” stories before showing the Grade 10s their classrooms and jungle gyms, and getting them involved in games on the playground. Small interactive story telling groups could be seen scattered all around the Grade R block, with delighted 6 year olds engrossed in the stories and characters. Some even acted out the stories afterwards. The stories and illustrations created by the Grade 10 students were magnificent. Much discussion occurred back in the classrooms as Grade R children retold the stories they had heard to their peers and discussed who had the best Grade 10 writer! We truly loved watching our students connect through these stories. What a wonderful way to make the magic of reading and writing come alive for our little children, who are now determined to become authors themselves.
