Coding and Cupcakes at Girls' Prep

Imagine the typical conversation driving home from school, “What did you do at school today?” You would be lucky to get any more information than the latest tuck shop snack review! To really see what your daughter is up to, you may need to be a “fly on the wall” or I might have to teach in a glass building for you to have a clear view. Since neither of these are options, why not try Coding & Cupcakes? Ah, yes; coding, robotics, and a sugary treat all in one! This event gives parents a real taste of what we do in coding and robotics, right in the classroom.

At first, it is a bit of a shock for many parents who realise they are expected to participate. I often hear, “But I don’t know how to code!” or “I last coded in 1999!” This is what I love about Coding & Cupcakes. The girls get to show off what they know, and parents go on their own little coding and robotics adventure, GP-style. I always warn parents: it’s going to be loud, lively, and filled with laughter, excitement, and cheers. Between the robots, the girls and all the learning, the energy is contagious.

Our Coding & Cupcakes event is not just about learning; it’s an opportunity to show off our #CodeLikeAGirl and #GirlsCanCode initiatives. My mission? To get girls coding, innovating, exploring robotics, tech, and even gaming. I want our girls to push boundaries, and what better way to do that than by showing mom, dad, or even grandma how to drive a Sphero, give binary instructions to an Ozobot, code a dance party, or use a micro:bit - a pocket-sized computer to get creative!

It is vital for parents to witness the incredible skills their daughters are building, to champion this initiative and to understand why coding, robotics and tech literacy are more than just skills—they are a pathway to their future. By stepping into this world with their daughters, parents send a strong, empowering message: “You belong here. You can lead, innovate, and create.” Together, we are showing our girls that they are not just participants in a classroom activity but pioneers shaping tomorrow. When parents cheer them on, it fuels their confidence, resilience and ambition to break barriers and make a real impact in a tech-driven world. This is why we have Coding & Cupcakes—because every girl deserves to know that she can code her own future.

Robotics is not just a field of science; it’s a canvas for art, innovation, and progress.” - Rodney Brooks.
