Chess

'I thoroughly enjoy playing the chess team members on a regular basis, ensuring that the girls know the fundamentals of good opening and middle games (we are still working on end games – the main reason for many of our match losses),' comment from the coach, Julia-Anne Pechey.

The senior girls keep on devising good opening moves and variations on standard moves and are always keen to teach and assist the juniors.

An interesting analogy is that our girls (and other girls’ chess teams) do not perform as successfully against their opponents at boys’ schools. Girls often play defensively, nurture their pieces and are less willing to take risks. We currently working on a variety of ways to encourage a more aggressive approach to the game and look forward to future successes.
