Campus abuzz for World Bee Day

May 20, 2022 | Campus, Girls’ College

Today our whole campus was abuzz celebrating World Bee Day.  Students and staff from our 5 schools acknowledged the day by wearing yellow and black civvies and engaging in all sorts of activities linked with St Stithians’ Environmental, Leadership and Service pillars. In line with our St Stithians College Statement of Purpose to promote environmental awareness and action, along with the Round Square IDEALS which include Environmentalism and Service a very happy and educational BEE DAY was enjoyed across the whole Campus. May was the chosen month for World Bee Day because in the northern hemisphere the need for pollination is greatest during this period, while in the southern hemisphere it is a time for harvesting honey and bee products.

At 08h00 (06h00 GMT) a number of student representatives gathered in the Girls’ Prep Sensory Garden to participate in an International Zoom call hosted by our special guest for the day, Lesego Serolong. The Founder of the One Million Beehives Initiative, which is the 2022 Round Square Virtual Service Project, spoke about how looking after the bee population has not only helped our agricultural industry, it has also provided much needed employment and revenue for many of South Africa’s poorest communities. Lesego showed our students hives and honeycombs, and explained the inner workings of a bee colony and the important part these insects play in sustaining our environment.

Funds raised from today’s civvies day will be donated to this proudly South African initiative. For more information about the project, bees, and the communities benefitting from the One Million Bee Hives Campaign, please watch this fascinating YouTube video.

As the Founder of the One Million Beehives Initiative, we thank Lesego Serolong for joining us on our Campus on World Bee Day to share her knowledge with us, and via Zoom with other RS Students around the world, about bees in an interactive, creative and educational way.  We also welcomed Sharon from MacBee Honey to  the Girls’ Prep – an educational and fun talk that was enjoyed by our Girls’ Prep students.

We thank #OneAndAll for celebrating World Bee Day with us and in so doing, contributing to this worthy cause.
