Swimming Siblings make Saints Proud
The St Stithians Aquatics Centre proudly hosted the Central Gauteng Aquatics Champs for the second year in a row in our 50m Olympic Pool.
This prestigious event was held from 30 November to 3 December 2023 and St Stithians’ siblings, brother and sister, Cameron (Gr12) & Jessica Thompson (Gr10) took home an impressive haul of 22 gold medals between them. Cameron achieved 12 golds and Jessica 10 in their individual events and relays.
Cameron was in turn selected to represent South Africa at an invitational gala - the Vladimir Salnikov cup in St Petersburg, Russia, 16-18 December.
Cameron qualified for a B final in his 100m butterfly and swam 3 PB’s in his 50m free, fly and 100m fly events. This is no small feat considering he was competing against the best Russia had to offer.
Jessica took part in World Trials at Kings Park in KZN over this same time hoping to qualify for World Champs Doha in February 2024. The best swimmers in SA competed at these trials to qualify.
Jessica came 2nd in the 50m & 100m Butterfly events to our Olympian, Erin Gallagher. Jessica also placed 4th in the 50m free and 5th in her 100m backstroke events. Jessica broke the South African 16 year old age group record in the 50m backstroke with an impressive time of 28.97 which also gave her a B Qualifying time for Worlds.
Their mother Liesel Thompson commented, “Thank you as always for supporting their dreams and trying to accommodate their highlights into their academic lives.
“One and All” we thank you so very much. 2024 is the year where dreams can be made! There are many big galas lined up on their sporting calendar and by the Grace of God they hope to achieve their goals”.
We #OneAndAll congratulate Cameron and Jessica and wish them welll as the continue to work towards their dreams.
