International Mathematics Competition

Bradley Hultzer and Keldon Schroeder (Boys’ College grade 10) and Jessica James (Girls’ Collge, grade 10), were selected as members of the South African team which competed in the 2018 International Mathematics Competition in Burgas, Bulgaria from 1 – 6 July. They were accompanied by Boys’ College Maths Teacher, Ms Katy Mellor (Boys’ College Maths Teacher) who travelled with the team as Deputy Leader.

The International Mathematics Competition has taken place annually in its current form since 2008 and is hosted in different countries each year. The team’s selection was based on their strong performance in the International Mathematics Assessments for Schools (IMAS) competition written in February this year.

In Bulgaria, the three St Stithians students took part in the individual and team components of the competition. For the team event, their team of four was completed by Lloyd Geddie (Clifton, Durban). Apart from the challenge of the tough mathematics papers, other highlights included interacting with contestants from the 28 other competing countries, participating in a mathematical puzzle challenge, exploring local sights and historic landmarks, and taking part in a large parade made up of all the contestants in the competition through the city centre. It was a week of exciting mathematics, new friends and unforgettable experiences.

We are incredibly proud of our students for being members of the South African team at this prestigious, international event.
