Grade 1 Winter Storytelling Evening

July 29, 2022 | Junior Preparatory

As long as there have been people, there have been stories. From the stories told in paintings on the ancient caves at Lascaux (Google it!) to the bedtime stories told to young children, stories make up our history and guide our future and give us access into incredible places and characters as far as our imaginations can take us. We are surrounded by stories every day and we all have a story to tell. Stories are powerful. They can teach morals and values. They can teach history. They can entertain us. They can make us think about things in ways we’ve never thought of them before. They can make us laugh. They can make us cry. Telling stories is a large part of what makes people connected to each other. This was the inspiration behind our Story telling evening on 14 July. It is important to start making connections again after being disconnected for such a long time because of COVID.

The teachers came dressed in their warm pyjamas and onesies and we encouraged children to come in their pyjamas and to bring a fluffy toy, blanket, pillows and cushions to sit on. They also brought a drink of their choice. Earlier in the week the children were given dessert options to choose from. The children made their choices and there was a buzz of excitement in the air the entire week building up to the our Storytelling evening. Even load shedding did not dampen our excitement. The teachers brought in lamps, lanterns and fairy lights to decorate the classrooms. The children also brought in head lamps and lanterns. This created a warm and cosy ambience in each classroom. The teachers selected two appropriate stories for each class. We shared the first story with the children. They then had a break and were given their chosen delicious dessert. Eskom was kind enough to switch our electricity back on and the children enjoyed their second story.

It was an enjoyable evening at school for all the children and teachers alike. Thank you to all the parents for bringing your child to school that evening.
