Spirituality as one of the Seven Pillars of the College

Today in the Boys’ Prep, we honour our Chapel Stewards who assist Reverend Sibeko in the running of the Chapel Services which all boys and staff attend every Monday and Thursday. We share below some of the reflections of the boys who were inducted as Chapel Stewards earlier in the year:

"At St Stithians, we are constantly taught about Jesus’ ideal of having servant leadership. It is this servant leadership that we as Chapel Stewards mirror. During services, we all have individual roles to play. This includes lighting of the candles, call to worship and Bible readings. It is these roles that enable us to assist Reverent Dix in spreading the word of God and demonstrating servant leadership to younger grades.” Callon May

“What I enjoy about being a Chapel Steward, is being able to help with the other Chapel Stewards in all the services and being able to sit in the front of the Chapel. I really like Rev Dix and want to help out when I can.” Andrew Ochse

"Being a Chapel Steward has been fun. It has been interesting to further my relationship with God. Being a Chapel Steward, we get to go to ‘Boys for God’, where we can learn about God. It has been important as all boys of all grades can come together to further their relationship with God." Ethan Smith

"What I love about Chapel Stewardship is that I learn a lot about God and taking part in the Chapel. Lighting the candles and doing prayers has been my favourite part." Kai Joseph

"What I like about being a Chapel Steward is that I get to feel closer to God because you get to light the candles and read scriptures about God. You are learning about God every single Chapel service. The group that I learn with is amazing because we work and understand each other as Chapel Stewards.” Khanya Lebina

“What I love about Chapel is the comradeship between the listeners, the staff and the choir. I absolutely cherish the moments between the opportunities and responsibilities we have as Chapel Stewards. Some of the things we get to do is light the candles, call to worship and to start prayers in the chapel. If I could do this in College I definitely would. I am going to miss this job and the responsibility of being a Chapel Steward." Chad Parker

"What I love about being a Chapel Steward is that we always try to learn. I love being the one to call for worship in the Chapel because I start the Chapel. ‘Boys for God’ was fun learning about God and Jesus in a different way.” Takudzwa Chivinge

Spirituality is one of the Seven Pillars of the College and gives expression to our Methodist ethos which underpins and shapes the values of the College. The Methodist Church of Southern Africa has played a significant role in the life of St Stithians College since the school’s earliest days, when it was first imagined by two staunch Methodists, Albert Collins and William Mountstephens.
