Celebrating Mandela Day at St Stithians Boys’ Prep
Mandela Day serves as a significant day in the South African calendar, and we at St Stithians take immense pride in celebrating Nelson Mandela's legacy through acts of kindness on 18 July. This year, we held our second collaborative Mandela Day initiative involving all three schools: Junior Prep, Boys' Prep, and Girls' Prep. This initiative focused on two key aspects:
Toy and Book Making for Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDs): The boys dedicated their time and effort over the past few weeks to creating toys and books from recycled materials for disadvantaged Early Childhood Development Centres, in collaboration with Toys To Good.
Donation Drive for Mothers and Babies: On 18 July, a special assembly was held on Ridgway Field where all three schools came together to present a collection of donated items to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital and Nelson Mandela Hospital. These carefully chosen items aim to support mothers embarking on their new motherhood journey, and consisted of disposable nappies, vests/baby grows, blankets/receivers, baby toiletries, and maternity pads. Each personalised care package contained similar essential items and a heartfelt message from the St Stithians community.
Thank you to Mrs Sivani Naidoo, our Community Engagement Coordinator at the Boys’ Prep, and all staff for their hard work over the past weeks. On the day, parents arrived on Ridgway Field after the service to pack all the donated items into bags. Our heartfelt thanks to you all for your enthusiasm and dedication. A total of 326 bags were packed and handed over to the representatives from each hospital who attended the ceremony.
