Art at the Girls' Prep

June 23, 2023 | Girls’ Preparatory | Author: Art is a space for unlimited creativity and exploration

At the Girls’ Preparatory we are passionate about art! It is a space for unlimited creativity and exploration. Art holds tremendous value for all our girls, as it allows them to freely explore ideas and thoughts. Moreover, it provides invaluable opportunities for them to develop their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. We approach art from a multi-disciplinary perspective, recognising the vital importance of exposing our students to a diverse range of art-making techniques. Our goal is to prepare them for the world by equipping them with experience in both traditional and digital art.

At the Girls’ Prep we express our love for art through an exciting interhouse art competition. This competition provides the girls with a fun opportunity to contribute to their house points. This year, the competition topic was ‘Girl on Fire’, reflecting our overarching theme for 2023. All of the participating girls were tasked with interpreting the theme through their artwork, using either digital or traditional media.

After careful consideration, the judging panel consisting of Girls’ Prep staff members, have selected three winning pieces of art, based on the artists’ creative interpretation of the theme and display of technical skill. Third place was awarded to Vishwa Bhala in Grade 5, Stratton House. Her outstanding work, completed entirely on iPad, showcases her impressive digital skills. Our runner-up, Alyssa Pasqualle in Grade 6, Cambourne House, chose to use the traditional media of pencil and pencil crayon to create a beautiful and fiery pair of dancing ballet shoes. And the winner of our 2023 Interhouse Art Competition was Isabel Kaluba in Grade 6, representing her house, Trewen. Her stunning rendition, titled ‘Burning Heart’, was completed using pencil crayons and markers. It powerfully captures our inner struggles and the triumph over adversity. Aren’t these artworks truly remarkable?

We firmly believe that art plays a vital role in the development of young minds. It helps enhance fine motor skills and empowers young people to interpret the world around them. At the Girls’ Prep we are deeply committed to the holistic development of our students, and we demonstrate this commitment by integrating art into our school curriculum as an essential component.
