Africa Day Celebrations at the Junior Prep
Over the past two weeks, our school has been alive with the vibrant rhythms, colours, and stories of Africa as we celebrated Africa Day under the theme “Our Continent, Our Country.” From Grade RRR to Grade 2, our young students embarked on a joyful journey of discovery, creativity, and cultural pride.
The festivities began on 12 May, with every class enjoying a special marimba lesson, kindly facilitated by Mr. Mike Sibanda. The children were captivated by the rich sounds of this traditional African instrument and their enthusiasm was infectious as they danced and played along to the beat.
Throughout the two-week celebration, the Junior Prep was transformed into a hub of African music, dance and storytelling. Our Africa Day assembly showcased the diversity of our continent and shared important facts about South Africa. It was a moment of pride and learning as students reflected on what makes our country and continent so unique.
On 22 May, we had the honour of hosting renowned author Refiloe Moahloli, who shared her inspiring journey to becoming a writer. She read her book ‘How many ways can you say hello?’ to the children, sparking laughter, curiosity and thoughtful conversations about individuality, language and identity. Her visit was a celebration of the power of stories to connect us all.
The Junior Prep came alive with beautiful displays of African art and crafts, lovingly created by our students. These visual works reflected the creativity and cultural richness of “Our Continent, Our Country,” and were a true highlight of the celebration.
We are so proud of our students and staff for embracing the spirit of Africa Day with such joy and enthusiasm. The Junior Pep continues to celebrate our diverse cultures, our stories and our shared future.
