Our Stories, Our Heritage, Our GC
Heritage is more than a date on the calendar. It is found in the stories passed down to us, in the languages spoken around dinner tables, in the songs that carry memories, in the food prepared with love, in the traditions we hold close, and in the people who have shaped who we are.
This Heritage Month, our Girls’ College community has been invited to celebrate these stories and, perhaps more importantly, to listen to them.
Under the theme “Our Stories, Our Heritage,” we have celebrated the richness of our diversity through Chapel, assemblies, activities, music, dance, dress, storytelling, and cultural experiences. We have laughed, shared, learned, and created opportunities to see one another beyond what may be familiar to us.
But perhaps the greatest gift of Heritage Month is the invitation to become curious.
When was the last time you took the time to learn about a culture that was not your own? Not simply to admire its clothing, taste its food, or listen to its music, but to understand the stories behind them? To ask someone, “What does this mean to you?” To listen without making assumptions? To allow another person's history, traditions, and experiences to expand your understanding of the world?
Cultural appreciation begins there: with curiosity, humility and respect. It asks us to move beyond simply seeing difference to genuinely seeing people. It reminds us that we do not have to share the same heritage to honour it. We do not have to understand every experience to listen to it. And we do not have to come from the same place to find something that connects us.
To appreciate a culture is to look beyond what we see on the surface and seek to understand the story beneath it. Our conversations around cultural appreciation and appropriation have reminded us of the importance of listening, learning, and approaching difference with humility. Every tradition carries meaning, history, and memory, and those who carry them deserve the space to share their stories in their own voices.
Perhaps, then, the most meaningful way to celebrate Heritage is to leave this month knowing one another a little better than we did before.
Because every person we encounter carries a story we may never fully know. A story of where they come from. A story of joy, struggle, resilience, faith, family, tradition, and hope.
And when we take the time to listen to those stories, something beautiful happens: our world becomes bigger.
As we celebrate Heritage Day, may we carry with us not only pride in our own heritage, but a genuine curiosity about the heritage of others. May we continue to create a school where every story has a place, every culture is treated with dignity, and every person feels that who they are matters.
Because our heritage may tell us where we come from, but the way we honour one another helps shape where we go next.
