St Stithians College owes its existence to those who fearlessly set sail before us. Our school is named after St Etaine who braved the Irish Sea in the fifth century to found the parish of Stithian. Our Methodist founders, Albert Collins and William Mountstephens, left the safety of Cornwall filled with faith to serve their Lord. They taught us that we are defined by what we dare to do. Sailing to Africa and watching the constellations turn, they could not have imagined that there would be a place of learning such as St Stithians College, with footprints across Africa and on every continent of the world. They thought differently – theirs was not the usual journey. Theirs was the light, hope and strength that Methodist faith and the knowledge that we are all part of a greater destiny.
Anchored by our Methodist faith, we believe that hope joins faith to achieve the impossible. Hope inspires passion and purpose and we have the Saints spirit to stay the course as we plan a tomorrow for our children. We see a future where we shine the light of education more brightly than ever before.
We are determined to ensure the sustainability of St Stithians College to continue to serve with the same generosity shown by our founders. Their bequest was made with understanding that the College would educate young South Africans of substance. They could never have imagined the world of difference that their school would make to one and all at all levels of society – a gift of a future that our College must keep shining through the eyes of every child in all 8 of our schools.
This is about more than raising money. This is about rethinking education and showing all who sail on our ship - students, staff, parents, alumni, friends and stakeholders – that to dream is not to wish, but to act.
