STEAM - Outdoor Education

November 18, 2021 | Girls’ Preparatory | Author: Cebo Zondo

To launch the indigenous knowledge component of outdoor education, the girls learned about the history of Girls’ Prep, as well as notable locations associated with our school's legacy and history. The Duck area was selected as the main focus point. The Duck sculptures are located at the precise location that used to be an important breeding site for Egyptian geese.

The history of the Ducks fascinated the Grade 5 girls, so they chose to build a solid construction for a nest that the geese would appreciate. The girls were enthusiastic about the entire process and manufactured the project out of natural resources. The goal of the project was to teach the girls that birds are natural engineers, builders, designers and recyclers. Through the process, the girls became aware of the birds' recycling abilities.

They also made a Christmas wreath to express their gratitude for the upcoming holiday season. We are grateful to Mrs Pauline Dickson's excellent novel, The Gardener's Legacy, which has contributed to the girls’ understanding of the natural heritage of the Girls' Prep.

We pride ourselves in how we approach girls' education. We do girls’ education “Inside Out”! We plan to keep you informed about our creative and transformative outdoor education, and indigenous knowledge curriculum.
