Amidst the COVID-19 Lockdown, a ray hope and a show of community solidarity saw more than 1000 runners and walkers in the St Stithians College community, and beyond, taking on the Thandulwazi Freedom Run Family Home Challenge on Freedom Day, 27 April 2020.  These community members from around the world took on either a 2.5km, 5km or 10km run or walk within the confines of their properties, where they are in lockdown, to raise funds for the Thandulwazi Academic Scholarship Programme.  Despite not being able to do this in their favourite streets and parklands, everyone completed their challenges to make a world of difference by raising R50,800 for the Scholarship Programme and an additional R2,475 for the other three Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy Programmes in support of historically disadvantaged Learners, Teachers and Student-Teachers.

The Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy was established in 2005 by St Stithians College as a nation-building education programme, recognising that by providing a greater number of South African young people access to quality education, the Academy can also provide them with the knowledge and skills needed to become active and contributing members of our broader South African community and economy; and in order to achieve this, the Academy also realised that the upskilling and training of professional teachers plays a critical role to the future of our country.
