Saints Dams and Waterways

February 26, 2016 | Junior Preparatory

St Stithians College is fortunate to have a campus with dams and waterways. Both are used extensively for water related projects for all ages. Curriculum based projects come to life as the learners are able to explore classroom-based activities on a practical level around our campus. It also affords us the opportunity to do long term studies of the waterways.

There are two main drainage systems flowing through Saints, a northern drainage system that starts above the dam and a southern drainage system that starts in the Lyme Park suburb. Both systems leave the school property near the Peter Place gate.

As part of our Ecoschools projects, at the Junior Prep we start with walks along the waterways and up to the dam. The children learn about lifecycles and the importance of clean water along the way. At the dam they feed the ducks, birdwatch and picnic. The appreciation of the environment we instill in the children continues into the Preps and Colleges, where students study the biodiversity of our water areas.
