The Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA), Central District Synod took place from May 24th to 28th, 2023. The theme for the Synod was "Remaining in the Love of Christ." The Synod was co-hosted by St Stithians College and Johannesburg North, both circuits of the Central District Synod.

Synod began with a Ministerial Convocation where ministers reflected on their calling and discussed responses to social issues. The delegates registered and attended sessions in the afternoon, surrounded by reminders of God's work. The evening service at the St Stithians College Chapel was a highlight. The Chapel is the spiritual heartland of the College that welcomes all regardless of backgrounds including its theologically themed stained-glass windows. The Bishop Faith Whitby in her message challenged all to rediscover their identity which is rooted in the love of Christ, and to bear good fruit. This message was followed by a time of sharing in the Lord’s Supper together as the Methodist family.

The Synod was blessed with the presence of the students from the Girls' and Boy’s College, who assisted in a number of ways. The JP choir, GP choir, BP pianist student, BC Dukes, GC worship team and the Marimba band showcased their talents and added a worshipful atmosphere at the Synod. The Rector of St Stithians College expressed gratitude for the school's relationship with the MCSA and highlighted their commitment to their Methodist roots.

On the last day of the Synod at St Stithians, the delegates engaged in a Bible study and honoured ministers with long years of service. The delegates were blessed by the generosity of the PTA’s and the Prayer Group and others who made the Synod run smoothly.

Gratitude was conveyed by the Synod delegates per Circuit and Organizations including the Bishop Faith Whitby who indicated as follows: “The delegates to the 53rd Central District Synod were welcomed to St Stithians College with a warm and generous hospitality. Hosting a large gathering like a Synod is no small task, but Saints lived up to its honour code in ensuring that we were well cared for. Meals were generous and always on time, and the often tricky technical aspects of the meeting, such as managing the audio-visual system, were handled with grace and attentiveness. The highlight for many of the Synod Delegates was the presence of the children, and the gift of music shared by each of the schools in a special way brought great joy to all. We are deeply grateful for the hospitality offered by Saints and congratulate the College on 70 years of Welcome and Wonder, of Happy Fulfilment. May St Stithians College continue to inspire excellence and make a world of difference for all.”

Overall, the Central District Synod was a time of reflection, worship, and unity, with a focus on remaining in the love of Christ and bearing good fruit. This Synod was seen as fulfilling and humbling, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of those who attended.
