Money Matters: A Journey Through Time

The Grade 2 students have embarked on an exciting journey through the fascinating world of money. This week, they became "money detectives" as they uncovered how people bought and traded goods long before the money we know today existed.

Their exploration began with bartering, where people exchanged goods for other goods. Imagine trading a basket of apples for a loaf of bread! From there, the students travelled through history to discover how people used gold and other precious metals to determine value and make exchanges.

The excitement continued as the students uncovered the story of the first coins and the later introduction of paper money. They had the opportunity to examine real coins, banknotes and even a bank card, helping them gain a deeper understanding of how money has evolved over time.

The class also investigated how money is used in the modern world. From carrying cash to tapping bank cards, mobile phones and smartwatches to make purchases, the students were amazed by the many ways people pay for goods and services today.

Their curiosity then led them to step into the future and imagine what money might look like in years to come. Could people one day use their fingerprints to pay for their favourite items? Perhaps there will be even more innovative ways to make purchases that have not yet been imagined.

As part of this exciting learning adventure, the students are building their skills in calculating rands, cents and change. It has been a fascinating voyage through time, and they look forward to continuing their discovery of money and learning even more about its role in everyday life.

Through this engaging unit, the Grade 2 students are exploring the past, understanding the present and imagining the future of money.
